É na água que se sente “feliz”. Andrew Cotton, surfista inglês de 31 anos, esteve na Nazaré na semana passada para participar numa sessão de tow-in na Praia do Norte, na companhia de Garrett McNamara. Simpático, de sorriso simples e tímido, começou a surfar com oito, nove anos “apenas porque vivíamos perto da praia”. O surf tornou-se a sua vida, pelo que no futuro só quer “estar em forma e surfar mais algumas ondas grandes”.
It’s in the water that he feels “happy”. Andrew Cotton, a 31 year old English surfer, went to Nazaré last week to participate in a tow-in session at Praia do Norte, in the company of Garrett McNamara. Friendly, with a simple and shy smile, he started surfing at the age of eight, nine, “just because we lived close to the beach”. Surf became his life, so, for the future, he just wants “to stay fit and surf some more big waves”.
Depois da sessão com Garrett sentiu-se realizado. “Fizemos tow-in em algumas ondas grandes, num novo spot, com surfistas que tinha conhecido pela primeira vez e ficámos todos bem no final da sessão”, disse Cotty, como também é conhecido.
After the session with Garrett he felt accomplished. “We'd all towed some big waves, at a new spot, with surfers I'd met for the first time and everyone was safe at the end of the session”, said Cotty, as he’s also known.
Já tinha estado em Portugal. Sobre a Nazaré diz ser “um lugar muito bonito com um antigo e tradicional sentimento pelas ondas, que falam por si”. São ondas com “um tamanho e um poder” que não podem ser encarados de ânimo leve, lembrando que antes de chegar a Portugal não sabia o que esperar. “Vi algumas fotografias, alguns vídeos online e ouvi o que o Garrett me disse mas só consegui perceber quando vi na realidade”, referiu.
He had already been in Portugal. About Nazaré he says that “is a beautiful place with an old and traditional feel as for the waves, well they sort of speak for themselves”. The waves have a “size and power” that can not be taken lightly. He remembered that before he went to Portugal he didn’t knew what to expect. “I had seen a few photos, watched a couple of videos online and taken onboard what Garrett had told me but it wasn’t till I saw it for real I could take it all in”, referred.
O que Cotty mais gostou desta experiência foi de ter posto à prova as suas capacidades e de ter aprendido com Garrett, que considera “muito engraçado e espirituoso”. Adorou o fondue de peixe do restaurante A CELESTE – “Maravilhoso” – e da equipa diz que era “descontraída e simpática”: “Era como se já os conhecesse há anos.” Por tudo isso, está ansioso por regressar e por participar no The North Canyon Show 2012.
What Cotty most liked about this experience was to test his abilities and learning from Garrett, who he considers “very funny and witty guy”. He loved the fish fondue at the restaurant A CELESTE – “Maravilhoso” – and about the team he said that was “relaxed and friendly”: “It really felt like I’d known them for years”. For all of this, he can’t wait to return and take part at The North Canyon Show 2012.
